Romantik Hotel Stern is at the heart of the rich history and culture of Chur. Its unparalleled historic background dates back to the engravings of Johannes Stumpf. One of his works from 1548 displays a large building close to the lovely Regula Church, and tradition has it that the walls of that church in the heart of Chur might be the foundations of the present Romantik Hotel Stern.

The first written record is a statement from 1677 of the existence of an inn named Stern. By that time Chur was an important meeting point for merchants and travelers along the trade routes of Switzerland. Whether they arrived by way of one of the many mountain passes or from Lake Bodensee, they would meet in Chur, known as a hub for the flourishing traffic of goods between the north and the south in Medieval times. In Chur they found lodging for themselves and their horses at the mews of the Stern.

The Stern changed hands often through the years. The City of Chur even owned it for a number of years. But it seems that the constant change of ownership did its reputation no harm. A well-known Town Registrar categorized the Stern among the five most distinguished inns of the nineteen century.

The Stern was a place where celebrities and business or leisure travelers alike always felt at home. James Fenimore Cooper, the author of “Leatherstockings,” was one of many celebrities who stayed at the Stern. He was there in 1828 while travelling through the Grisons. And Viktor von Scheffel, the author of “Trompeter von Säckingen” and “Ekkehard,” stopped by in August 1884. In 1948, Bertolt Brecht paid a five-week visit, accompanied by actress Helene Weigel and theatre director Caspar Neher. This is where they prepared their celebrated version of “Antigone,” and its first performance was in Chur. In more recent days, the hotel has had the pleasure of hosting actors of the status of Maria Becker, Horst Tappert, Christian Kohlund, Walter Roderer and Ruth Jecklin, Anne Marie Blanc, Ursula Monn, and many more.

A fresh breeze has been sweeping the Stern since January 1st, 2006, when Adrian K. Müller purchased the hotel, together with Beat P. and Marie-Christine Zeller. He committed himself to reviving the Stern and restoring it to its splendor of old. The new patron had learned the ropes of the hotel trade right there in the Stern during his apprenticeship with Milo and Dolores Pfister. After a challenging and successful career in Asia, Adrian K. Müller returned to his roots along with his family to devote himself to this jewel in the heart of his native Chur.
